BTEC Level 3 Award in delivering Physical Intervention Training            


Additional physical intervention training is now required to become a licensed and qualified door supervisor from June 2010. All new door supervisors following this date will be required to have successfully completed and passed a physical intervention training course.

This means any training companies or tutors of door supervision will not be able to deliver a fully SIA licensed course without being trained, licensed and qualified to “Deliver Physical Intervention Training”. .


Who is the course for?

This Level 3 Award is for trainers and teachers in the security industry and those who wishes to train other students how to effectively use physical intervention skills. This includes trainers of the new SIA Door Supervisor awards.

Level 3 Award for Physical Intervention Trainers in the Private Security Industry is awarded to all successful candidates. The new City and Guilds QCF award will also be awarded when launched.

What are the entry requirements?

To enrol on this course you will need :

PTLLS Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector – or equivalent
and 1886 Conflict Management Trainers Certificate - or equivalent

Students must have the physical ability to complete the course.

You must also be able to provide proof of Identification and proof of address as per SIA guidelines. Please click here to see acceptable forms of Identification.

How long is the course?

3 Days.

What does the course involve?

  • You will be taught how to explain the factors that are vital to the effective and safe delivering of physical intervention skills.
  • You will also be made aware of the potential consequences of deviating from the approved physical intervention programme or SIA Physical Intervention syllabus. In addition, the physical intervention trainer must be able to manage candidates' behaviour to ensure a safe and effective learning environment as well as identify and manage barriers to learning.
  • To pass you must demonstrate competent delivery and instruction in physical intervention skills during the observed sample lesson.
  • Physical Intervention Trainers must be able to asses the skills being taught to their learners against nationally set standards.


    • Unit 1 : To assess the training environment to reduce risks in physical intervention training

      • Risk assess a training environment where physical intervention skills will be taught
      • Identify and record ways of reducing risk in the training environment
      • Identify personal factors that may increase risk for participants
      • Conduct a safety briefing
      • Health and Safety
      • Ensure participants are physically prepared to take part in physical intervention training

      Unit 2 : To safely and effectively manage the learning environment for physical intervention skills

      • Explain factors critical to the effectiveness and safety of delivering physical intervention skills
      • Explain the potential consequences of deviating from an approved physical intervention programme
      • Manage learner behaviour to ensure a safe and effective learning environment
      • Identify and manage barriers to learning

      Unit 3 : To deliver instruction in physical intervention skills

      • Organize and position learners so that they can learn effectively from instruction
      • Explain the purpose and potential use of the skill about to be taught
      • Provide an accurate and safe demonstration of the skill being taught
      • Break down the skill into component parts for the learners
      • Supervise safe practice of skills
      • Resolving Conflict
      • Provide learners with coaching points and feedback
      • Adapt teaching to facilitate problem solving and application in the workplace

      Unit 4 : to assess physical intervention skills

      • Demonstrate knowledge of the agreed standards in the assessment of physical intervention skills
      • Assess learners against agreed standards
      • Complete accurately required assessment documentation

      How much does the course cost?
      £600 per person + VAT
